Solid-Brass Mortice Door Knobs

Mortice knobs are fitted to both faces of the door and connected by a spindle passing through a latch or lock installed within the door edge. Their rounded form provides a more traditional alternative to lever handles, while cleaner and reeded designs can also work well in contemporary and transitional interiors.

Heritage Brass mortice knobs are available in finishes including Antique Brass, Polished Brass, Satin Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome, Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel and Matt Bronze. Availability varies by design, so check the individual product before coordinating knobs with hinges, turns and escutcheons.

Half-Sprung or Unsprung Door Knobs?

Half-Sprung Mortice Knobs

A half-sprung mortice knob contains some spring assistance within the knob mechanism. It should be paired with a compatible lightly sprung latch, with the knob and latch working together to return the mechanism after use.

Unsprung Mortice Knobs

An unsprung mortice knob has no internal spring assistance. It relies on the spring inside the latch or lock to return the knob to its resting position, so a compatible heavy-duty or strongly sprung mechanism is normally required. A weak standard latch may allow an unsprung knob to droop or fail to return properly.

Always check the spring specification stated on the individual knob and select the recommended latch or lock. The strongest latch is not automatically correct for every knob: an excessively heavy action can also make the knob unnecessarily difficult to turn.

Choose a Suitable Backset

Door knobs need enough clearance between the knob and the door frame for your hand to turn comfortably. For this reason, mortice knobs are commonly paired with a 3-inch latch or lock providing approximately a 57mm backset, positioning the knob farther from the door edge than a common 2½-inch mechanism with a 44mm backset.

Measure from the edge of the door to the centre of the spindle and check the knob diameter, rose diameter and projection before ordering. This is particularly important when replacing existing hardware or fitting knobs near mouldings, glazing bars or narrow door stiles.

Using Mortice Knobs on Locking or Bathroom Doors

For a standard non-locking internal door, use the knobs with a compatible tubular latch. For keyed locking, pair them with a suitable sashlock and separate key escutcheons. Bathroom doors require a compatible bathroom lock and matching turn and emergency release. Make sure the lock backset provides sufficient hand clearance from the door frame.

Mortice Knobs or Rim Knobs?

Mortice door knobs work with a latch or lock fitted inside the door. Rim knobs are intended for a surface-mounted rim latch or rim lock fixed to one face of the door. The two configurations are not interchangeable, even when the knob design looks similar.
