Lever Door Handles on Backplate

A lever handle on backplate combines the grip and functional cut-out on one continuous plate. This creates a substantial appearance and makes it easy to identify whether the handle is intended for a standard latch, keyed lock, bathroom lock or Euro-cylinder mechanism.

The larger plate can also help cover marks or redundant fixing holes when replacing existing door furniture, although the new backplate dimensions and screw positions must be checked carefully before ordering.

Choose the Correct Backplate Function

Latch Door Handles

Latch backplates are plain beneath the lever and are intended for internal doors that need to remain closed without locking. They operate a compatible tubular latch installed in the door edge. The latch is normally purchased separately unless the product is offered as part of a complete door pack.

Traditional Lock Door Handles

Lock backplates include a conventional keyhole beneath the lever. They are paired with a compatible sashlock: the lever retracts the latchbolt, while the key operates the deadbolt. Check the distance between the spindle and keyhole as well as the lock backset.

Bathroom Door Handles

Bathroom backplates incorporate a privacy turn on the inside and an emergency release on the outside. They require a compatible bathroom lock within the door. Many products in this range use 57mm centres between the lever spindle and privacy spindle, but the individual specification must always be confirmed.

Euro-Profile Door Handles

Euro-profile backplates have a shaped cut-out for a Euro cylinder. They are used with a compatible Euro-profile sashlock and correctly sized cylinder. Measure the door thickness and allow for the backplates when selecting the cylinder length so it does not project excessively on either side.

Black Iron Backplate Door Handles

The matt-black iron designs use traditional sand-casting methods to produce characterful door furniture with a reassuring weight and textured appearance. Depending on the lever profile, they can complement cottages, barn conversions, period properties and industrial or country-inspired interiors.

Designs range from the compact Bridgnorth and Ashfield plates to the longer, narrower profiles found on selected Ludlow and Hadley handles. Backplate length, width, lever length and overall projection vary, so compare the technical dimensions rather than relying on photographs alone.

Rustic Bronze and Pewter Finishes

Selected backplate handles are offered in Rustic Dark Bronze and Rustic Pewter. These finishes provide an intentionally aged, characterful appearance that works well with natural timber, panelled doors and traditional interiors. Availability varies by design and function.

Check the manufacturer's care instructions and external-use guidance for the exact product. A rustic or black finish does not automatically make a handle suitable for an exposed external door or coastal environment.

Measure Before Replacing Existing Handles

Record the backplate length and width, fixing positions, lever projection, door thickness and lock or latch backset. For locking and bathroom handles, also measure vertically from the centre of the lever spindle to the centre of the keyhole, cylinder or privacy spindle.

Matching the visible backplate size does not guarantee compatibility with the existing mechanism. Confirm the spindle size, centres and case dimensions before drilling or reusing previous holes.
