📘 FAQs – Fire Rated Door Handles

❓ What makes a door handle fire rated?

Fire rated handles are tested under BS EN 1634-1 to ensure they don’t fail during a fire. They’re made from heat-resistant materials and often used with intumescent protection to slow the spread of fire.

❓ Are all door handles fire rated?

No. Only handles that have passed certified fire resistance tests and are labelled FD30 or FD60 rated are considered compliant. Look for CE/UKCA markings where applicable.

❓ Do I need special latches or locks too?

Yes – the entire hardware set (handle, latch/lock, hinges, and intumescent components) must be fire rated and compatible for the certification to be valid.

❓ Can fire rated handles be stylish?

Absolutely. Many fire rated handles now come in designer finishes and sleek modern profiles, giving you both safety and aesthetic appeal.

❓ Are intumescent kits required?

Yes – for most fire-rated installations, intumescent protection around the latch or handle is required to maintain the integrity of the fire door set.

❓ Are these handles suitable for external doors?

Yes – fire-rated handles can be used on internal or external fire-rated doors, provided the door set and lock are rated accordingly.
